Monarch of the Glen
The very successful BBC TV series was filmed in and around the area, with locations dotted here and there. Ardverikie House, just 25 minutes south-west of us, has achieved fame as Glenbogle House, whilst the steam trains of the Strathspey Steam Railway regularly haul in to Glenbogle Station – in real life better known as Broomhill.
Introduction
Monarch of the Glen, the hit BBC TV series produced by Ecosse Films was filmed here in Badenoch over a period of some 6 years.
Glen Bogle Castle is in fact Ardverikie House, on the shores of Loch Laggan, some sixteen miles south west of Newtonmore.
The Locations
Not all the filming for Monarch of the Glen was done around the house - or even around Laggan, Newtonmore and Kingussie - film locations extend well beyond the are known as Badenoch, into Strathspey (the area from Aviemore northwards) and out to Glen Spean - actually in Lochaber.
The Stars
Stars came and went in the six years of filming the series. Still fondly remembered by many are Alistair Mackenzie (Archie), Richard Briers (Hector), Dawn Steele (Lexie), Hamish Clark (Duncan) and Julian Fellowes (Kilwillie).
